Stefan van Staveren of Xylem Inc. was on site last week for a hardworking - get it done - one day cabinet install at the Barter House. I guess Carolina grads are actually good at something!
As you can see in the photograph of him - he was still having muscle memory lapses stemming back to the day we moved all of the Brazilian Walnut flooring to the job site.
If you’re in North Carolina and looking for a cabinet maker or millwork specialist - check out Xylem… you couldn’t find a more knowledgeable, dedicated and personable group of guys.
Go Duke!

Bob Stockford of Inside Trim was onsite all of last week performing his trim magic on the barter house stairs. Although there were several other trades constantly going up & down the stairs - he kept a positive attitude and kept on going.
My father even had the opportunity to pick Bob’s brain & help out with the clamps!

If you want something done right - they say to do it yourself…. or find someone you can trust.
I put my faith in my architect to detail the sections and my builder to find a siding contractor capable of putting some TLC into hanging the Verticial Ipe Siding on the modern barter house. If you remember, the architect did detail the Ipe siding and he also met with the supervisor and the builder’s siding sub to go over the details.
So after the drawings and meetings - I was excited to find out last week that the crew was finally starting on the install.
I drove out to the barter house after work last week and got my first glance at the siding. Unfortunately, I must say I was disappointed. A crew finished the job in one day - one day. I don’t care how big the crew is - it’s hard to believe that any TLC could go into a job in just 1 short day… a job that required detailed drawings and special meetings.
I immediately called my architect and supervisor to voice my frustration. Zero to 1 out of 5 bars on my iPhone (common) led to short conversations and a voicemail. My supervisor called right back (leaving me a message) stating he would get it taken care of.
The subs also threw several boards in the dumpster… at $3.00 per lineal foot - I went diving. A ridiculous crew.
The photos below will show the details of my frustration. The crew replaced the cross cut board and a few others - the job is still not right. I refuse to buy more siding to fix their mistakes.

The last post mentioned it was game time and indeed it is. I apologize for not posting in like 2 weeks, but I haven’t had the chance to sit down and write. I spent this last week away from work to get through the checklist. My father & step-mom came down from Cleveland to help and we made a lot of progress! Thank you guys.
The Brazilian Walnut flooring was laid by a local installer about a week and half ago. The flooring pretty much runs throughout the house with the exception of the full baths. The installers misinterpreted the Butler’s Pantry for a bathroom so there are still a few more planks to lay.
I initially thought that I would attempt the install while my pops was down - I’m glad we didn’t try as it took a group of 8 guys 3 days to install… not to mention it saved me from moving the flooring for a 3rd time.
